How Many Hindus Live in Gujranwala?

According to Pakistan’s 2023 Population Census, Hindus make up a small minority in Gujranwala District. While the exact number can vary depending on whether one refers to Gujranwala City or the entire district, Hindus represent less than 1% of the district’s total population. Most Hindus in Punjab are concentrated in southern districts, while Gujranwala has a comparatively smaller Hindu community.
Despite being a minority, the Hindu community contributes to the city’s cultural diversity through business, education, and social activities. We woke reasonably late following the feast and free flowing wine the night before. After gathering ourselves and our packs, we headed down to our homestay family’s small dining room for breakfast.

Historical Background

Before the partition of British India in 1947, Gujranwala had a much larger Hindu and Sikh population. The city was an important commercial center where Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs lived and worked together.

After partition, many Hindu and Sikh families migrated to India, while Muslim refugees from India settled in Gujranwala. This demographic shift significantly reduced the Hindu population in the region.

Religious Diversity in Gujranwala

Today, Gujranwala is primarily a Muslim-majority city, but it is also home to:

  • Hindus
  • Christians

  • Other minority communities

The city reflects Pakistan’s diverse cultural and religious heritage, with various historical sites and places of worship located throughout the district.
